Melter 3-D is a sculpture that is actually an optical illusion created by digital artist Takeshi Murata. The small chrome sphere sits alone in the corner of a dark room, illuminated by strobe lights from various angles. The lighting is synchronized with rapid spinning to create a hypnotic, repetitive impression of movement. It was shown at Frieze New York 2014.
The artist explains, "I’m very interested in technology and illusion. One of the my favorite aspects of art making is it’s connection to magic. I think there is some connection to magic in all the work I like. It’s a way of showing things in a new light, a new dimension that gives a perspective to recognize some of the illusion around us."
